The Roanoke Rapids Education Foundation, North Carolina Power, Champion Paper Company, the Roanoke Rapids Chamber of Commerce and The East Carolina University Center for Mathematics Science and Technology Education will lead a series of two-week Summer Science Explorations (SSEs) for middle grades students in Roanoke Rapids Graded School District. Participants will be students who have demonstrated interest in science, including a representative number of students who have been identified as at risk of failure in the traditional school setting. Local science teachers, with support from technical experts from the participating businesses, scientists from East Carolina University and a community panel from the Chamber of Commerce, will lead the explorations. The focus of the two-week summer experiences will be using modern technology to collect and analyze data related to the identification and solution of authentic problems in the Roanoke River Valley. As a result of the program, students will increase their awareness of the true nature of science, develop an interest in “real-world” science, and develop skills in using state-of-the-art technology in their research and presentations.
