The year-round MODELS program brings together scientists, undergraduate students, and high-school students to conduct and communicate authentic scientific research in environmental science. MODELS will improve the science competence of a significant contingent of least-served youth, particularly minorities and girls. Each year six Youth Partner Researchers will conduct original research projects and develop hands-on, inquiry-based programs aligned with their research. Guidance on the projects will be provided by research scientists, undergraduates majoring in biology at North Carolina Central University, environmental educators at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Museum professionals. Youth Partner Researchers will present their findings to 30 after-school classes at middle schools each fall and mentor 12 less-experienced Youth Partner Program Presenters who will communicate the programs to museum visitors. MODELS uses environmental fieldwork, original student investigations, and student-led, inquiry-based environmental education activities.
