The Duke Marine Lab and the Beaufort National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have partnered with Carteret County Schools to provide 400 middle school students with a year-round environmental education opportunity. A team of Duke Marine Lab faculty and students and K-12 educators will facilitate a three-project with Smyrna Middle School and Beaufort Middle School in Carteret County to explore water quality issues that have significant scientific, economic, and social importance to this commercial fishing community. The objective is to engage middle school students in a hands-on, long-term research project pertinent to their daily lives. The program will involve students in research excursions into the marine/coastal environment, support students' long-term, hands-on involvement in research, and enhance the growing and successful direct connection between middle school students in coastal communities and marine scientists. Students will share their research projects with their school and community, as well as other schools via the web.
