ZOO ANIMALS

Hey my name is Anisha Anthony and the website is about three animals that I was interested in when I went to the Ashboro Zoo. I had a lot of fun when I went on this trip. On this website I wrote about a Flamingo, Polar Bear, and a Gorilla. On each animal I wrote about their characteristics, adaptations, habitat, etc..

Flamingo

All flamingos are found in the tropical and subtropical forests. The Flamingos's most characteristic habitats are large alkaline or saline lakes or lagoons that usually lack vegetations. falmingos are generally non-migratory birds. Due to changes in the climate and water levels in their breeding areas, flamingo colonies are not always permanent. Male flamingos reach full site between one-and-a-half and two years. Male flamingos are slightly larger than the females, weighing more and having longer wingspans. Because flamingos have long legs, they can wade into much deeper water than most other birds. Their webbed feet support them on soft mud and allow them to swim. Flamingos are often seen in dense packs floating on the surface of the water. Flamingos frequnetly stand on one leg. Curling one foot under their body keeps their foot warm.

Polar Bear

Polar Bears are found in all of the polar regions of the entire northern hemisphere. There prefered area where the northern seas meet the shorline. Some polar bears spend part of the year on land. Polar Bears in warmer climates may become stranded on land. Polar Bears are the largest carnivore. The polar bear is a large mammal with a heavy stout body with strong muscular legs and well developed leg muscles. The hind limbs are stronger than the forelimbs. This makes the large muscular hind end stand higher than the shoulders. Polar bears legs are strong and stocky. They have short fur, covered ears and a very short tale. Polar bears are strong swimmers. They can swim for several hours at a time over long distances.

Gorillas

Western lowland gorillas inhabit tropical rainforests, forest edges and clearings, riverrine forests swamps, and abandoned fields. Adult female gorillas tend to be shorter than adult females, and weigh only half as much. A gorilla has a stocky build with a broad, shallow chest, a short trunk and longer arms than legs. Gorillas knuckle-walk by curling ip their fingers and walking on the soles of their feet. Like all apes, gorillas do not have a tail. The head of a gorilla is massive, with a bulging forehead overhanging the eyes and the bony sagittal crest on top. The faces on individual gorrilas vary on flat to prominent, round to oval. Their ears lie close to the skull. The small eyes are usually dark brown. Gorillas have 32 teeth. Adult gorillas lack hair on their fingers, the soles of their hands and feet, and armpits. The skin of a gorilla is dark and covered with black to reddish brown hair. As the animals mature the hair turns grey. New borns initially have pinkish grey skin which quickly darkens. Gorillas have not been observed making or using tools in the wild.
