Forest-Atmosphere Carbon Transfer and Storage

On July 20,1999, the first year students at the Summer Institute went to Duke Forest. More specifically, we went to the FACTS area. At FACTS, they experiment with trees and different levels of carbon dioxide. The scientists there made "rings" of pipe around an area of trees. In the pipes are carbon dioxide. The pipes that opened were always upwind of the trees. The wind would blow the carbon dioxide throughout the trees. While we were there, we climbed a big metal tower and were actually above the forest's canopy. We also looked at all of the computers used to control the carbon dioxide flow and monitored the results. A graduate student who studied the soil talked to us about what he does. Since he can't dig up the soil because of other experiments, he measures the amount of certain elements in the water collected in various layers of the forest.
