STEP is a year-round program designed to provide 60 middle and high school students with rich experiences in scientific research, teamwork, and leadership. STEP focuses on a series of yearlong science investigations. One is a multi-faceted study of water quality of Lake Hickory, done in conjunction with the Western Piedmont Council of Governments. Students monitor and plant vegetation in several key streams that empty into Lake Hickory, label important storm drains identified by the Council, and present their work to the Council and other underprivileged communities in the area. The program uses a combination of after-school meetings and Saturday field research to accomplish these goals. Participation in the program offers students a stronger knowledge of science and science careers.
