This year-round program will build on the university's efforts to provide middle school students in New Hanover County with innovative science and mathematics education by focusing primarily on coastal and marine sciences. Seventy-five students who have demonstrated outstanding achievement or interest in science--with particular emphasis on recruiting minority, female, and economically disadvantaged students--will attend a hour-week commuter summer science camp. Through a series of activities, including fundamental classroom science instruction, hands-on laboratory investigations, and scientific field exercises, the students will explore the purpose of science and experience first-hand the process skills of observation, measurement, and analysis. The students also will have opportunities to interact with mentor scientists at the university as well as at local, state, and federal agencies that have coastal science and technology responsibilities, and they will participate in a variety of career exploration activities. In follow-up activities during the academic year, the students will take part in ten lessons offered on weekends. Parents will be encouraged to be involved throughout the program.
