SSEP Programs: Campbell University School of Pharmacy - High School Science Seminars (HISS)

The High School Science Seminars (HISS) is a year-round program reaching 240 Harnett County high school students over three years. HISS encourages students to increase their understanding of science and science career options through science literature and hands-on experiences. Students will attend seminar style workshops at Campbell University, discuss selected reading materials, and participate in hands-on activities that correlate with the seminar topic. Seminars will help students increase their knowledge of science concepts and increase their awareness of science careers. Six students per year will be selected to spend two weeks shadowing a scientist and working in a laboratory to expand their insight in science investigation. At the end of each year, students will share their experiences and hands-on activities with their families at a spring assembly. In addition, twenty high school and middle school science teachers will attend a summer workshop to learn how to create similar seminar experiences in their classrooms.
