Organization: South Carolina Academic Standards for Mathematics
Grade Band: 3rd Grade
Standard Goal: Data Analysis and Probability
3-6.1 Apply a procedure to find the range of a data set.
Introduction to Statistics: Mean, Median, and Mode Lesson: Introduces statistical measures of center.

Measures
Activity: Enter data and view the mean, median, variance, and standard deviation of the data set. Parameters: Number of observations, range for observations, which statistics to view, identifiers for the data.
3-6.2 Organize data in tables, bar graphs, and dot plots.
Introduction to Bar Graphs Lesson: This lesson allows students to learn what bar graphs are used for, how to interpret the data presented, and how to organize their own data using bar graphs.

Scatter Plot
Activity: Graph ordered pairs and customize the graph title and axis labels. Points are connected from left to right, rather than being connected in the order they are entered.
3-6.4 Analyze dot plots and bar graphs to make predictions about populations.
Reading Graphs Lesson: Demonstrates the connections between formulas, graphs and words.

Scatter Plot
Activity: Graph ordered pairs and customize the graph title and axis labels. Points are connected from left to right, rather than being connected in the order they are entered.

Simple Plot
Activity: Plot ordered pairs of numbers, either as a scatter plot or with the dots connected. Points are connected from right to left, rather than being connected in the order they are entered.
3-6.5 Compare the benefits of using tables, bar graphs, and dot plots as representations of a given data set.
Graphing and the Coordinate Plane Lesson: Students learn basic ideas about graphing points on the coordinate plane.
Reading Graphs Lesson: Demonstrates the connections between formulas, graphs and words.

Histogram
Activity: View histograms for built-in or user-specified data. Experiment with how the size of the class intervals influences the appearance of the histogram. Parameters: Data sets, class sizes.

3-6.6 Predict on the basis of data whether events are likely, unlikely, certain, or impossible to occur.
Introduction to Statistics: Mean, Median, and Mode Lesson: Introduces statistical measures of center.
Introduction to the Concept of Probability Lesson: Introduces students to simple probability concepts.

Circle Graph
Activity: Enter your own data categories and the value of each category to create a pie chart. There are also built in data sets which can be viewed.

Normal Distribution
Activity: Change the standard deviation of an automatically generated normal distribution to create a new histogram. Observe how well the histogram fits the curve, and how areas under the curve correspond to the number of trials. Parameters: standard deviation, number of trials, class intervals.

Plop It!
Activity: Build line plots of data using your mouse. View how the mean, median, and mode change as entries are added to the plot. Parameters: Range for observations.
3-6.7 Understand when the probability of an event is 0 or 1.
Introduction to the Concept of Probability Lesson: Introduces students to simple probability concepts.
