Organization: North Carolina Standard Course of Study Grade Band: 3rd Grade Standard Goal: 4. The learner will understand and use data and simple probability concepts.
| Conditional Probability and Probability of Simultaneous Events |
Lesson: Introduces conditional probability and the probability of simultaneous events.
| | Ideas that Lead to Probability |
Lesson: Introduces students to concepts used which lead to probability.
| | Introduction to the Concept of Probability |
Lesson: Introduces students to simple probability concepts.
| Adjustable Spinner |
Activity: Create a game spinner with variable sized sectors to look at experimental and theoretical probabilities. Parameters: Sizes of sectors, number of sectors, number of trials.
| Crazy Choices Game |
Activity: Compare theoretical and experimental probabilities, using dice, cards, spinners, or coin tosses. Three different probabilities can be compared at once. Parameters: Type of probabilities, number of trials.
| Racing Game with One Die |
Activity: Experiment with probability and "fairness" with this simulation where two players each roll a die, and the lucky player moves one step towards the finish. Parameters: what rolls win and how many steps to the finish line.
| Simple Monty Hall |
Activity: Choose one of three doors to experimentally determine the odds of winning the grand prize behind one of the doors, as in the TV program "Let's Make a Deal" thereby exploring the unexpected probabilities resulting from this experiment. Parameters: Staying or switching between the two remaining doors.
| Spinner |
Activity: Create a game spinner with one to twelve sectors to look at experimental and theoretical probabilities. Parameters: Number of sectors, number of trials.
