Exploring Air Pressure

Topic: Air Pressure
Time Duration: 1 hour and 30 minutes
Grades: K to 4th grade

The students explored air pressure using balloons. The instructor conducted two experiments for the students. The first experiment was blowing up a balloon using different water temperatures. A glass bowl was filled with ice cold water and a glass bottle was filled with hot water. The balloon was placed over the neck of the bottle and pushed down into the bottle. The glass bottle was placed inside of the bowl and the balloon was slowly blown up by the different air pressures. The next experiment was called "Rocket Balloons". The students were grouped into teams of three or four and each group tried to launch the balloon across a string to the other team members. The class was able to explore how air pressure occurs and what it does.
