Functions are well defined if only one output can be assigned to each input. In other words, each x value (input) can have only one y value (output) associated with it (although one y value can have more than one x value). Graphically, this translates into a nice and easy test for functions, known as the vertical line test. If the curve graphed is a function, it will pass the vertical line test meaning that any vertical line drawn on the graph will cross the function in at most one place. If the graph passes this test then it is a function.
