Pie Chart

This applet allows the user to make pie charts.

A pie chart (also know as a circle graph) is a graphical way to organize data. All pie charts compare parts of a whole. For example, a pie chart for the time you spend at school would compare the amount of time you spend in each class and at lunch. A pie chart uses percentages to compare the information. Percentages are used because it is the easiest way to represent a whole. The whole is equal to 100%. So, you spend seven hours at school and 55 minutes of that time is spent eating lunch. Thirteen percent of your school day is spent eating lunch. To represent this in a pie chart you would need to find out how many degrees represents thirteen percent. This calculation can be done by a simple ratio. Percent /100% = the number of degrees / 360 degrees. This ratio works because the total percent the pie chart represents is 100% and there are 360 degrees in a circle. 46.8 degrees of the circle represents the time spent eating lunch. See if you can make a pie chart that represents what you do in a day.
