Shodor Workshops for High School Students Accepting Applications

DURHAM, N.C. — June 13, 2008 — Shodor, a Durham non profit organization serving students and educators to improve math and science education nationwide, is accepting applications for its workshops for rising 9th-11th grade students.

No previous experience in Shodor workshops or computational science (scientific computing) is required only a strong interest in math and science. Full and partial scholarships are available. Shodor's summer workshops aren't just "summer camps." Shodor is a Durham, NC based non profit organization serving students and educators nationwide. Youth and teens who participate in our local workshops not only enjoy a great learning experience, but they play a vital role in allowing us to test curriculum and materials that will be used in classrooms and in computational science workshops across the U.S.

The Graphics and Visualization Workshop is a one week, full day workshop from July 21-25 that will allow students to explore how computer graphics and data visualization, both scientific and artistic, are created. In the process, they will learn about free graphics programs they can download and use at home.

The Shodor Scholars Program is a two-week, full day workshop from August 11 - 22 that teaches and uses advanced computational science technologies, techniques, and tools to study a wide variety of scientific events. Students are provided structured and open-ended learning opportunities in computational science. The program culminates in a team research opportunity allowing the students choose an area of scientific interest, identify a problem, develop a computational solution to that problem and formally present it to an audience.

The workshops will be based at Shodor's research offices in the Durham Centre. Full and partial scholarships available for all workshops. Also, limited availability is still available for selected middle school workshops this summer.
